Fishing Report 12/8/10
Ollie Evans' big whiting

The tuna remain noticeable in their absence out wide, and it has been this way for some weeks at least now. We scored some flat seas with light NE winds over sunday and monday and there were some boats that headed for browns to fish the abyss and returned with blue-eye cod for the table. This sort of fishing is essentially the domain of power-assist reels although if you were keen for some 600-odd metres of winding then a stout overhead outfit loaded with heavy braid will be mandatory. In around the rocks there are good numbers of pigs available to those looking for a solid tussle. In addition to this the ubiquitous luderick is still taking weed baits on the ocean frontages as well as within the still water. The salmon remain patchy but a metal or diver spun through the wash will nab the odd fish. On the beaches, however, they are being taken in numbers at night on pilchard baits. In the harbour those anglers making the effort to establish a solid burley trail are reaping rewards in the form of legal snapper, flounder and trevally. Light prawn and pilchard baits will be dynamite although you can also work these areas will a slow soft plastic presentation, which does keep you more active. Working Squidgy wrigglers around the foreshore, FOW regular Ollie Evans scored a thumper sand whiting of well over 40cm in the shallows, along with some keeper bream. Quality bream have been coming from narrabeen lakes too, and small hardbodied minnows have been the undoing of these fish. Good luck and tight lines from the crew at Fish Outta Water!
