Washouts and Jigging Bouts 5/8/10 by Tommy

Fishing Report Thursday 5/8/10
Kingie on Jig

The sydney coastline has had a brief but thorough battering over the last couple of days and it was quite a sight to watch 3 metre waves close out across the entire Dobroyd bombora inside the harbour on tuesday, not to mention the lashing gusty winds and rain squalls. Wetting a line on such a day would be for the gung-ho among us. Come wednesday morning we were back to sunshine although the swell remained and the water looked soupy and prime for a snapper bash. The rocks proved unusually quiet and it would be interesting to hear how the boaties fared. On the beaches this means that heavy patches of weed have been dislodged from their substrate home and deposited on the shore, making for troublesome sandy angling. The salmon schools that have frequented the north head region seem to have either sounded or moved on to other grounds, although this is not to say that trolling this stretch or blind spinning from the shore would not produce. Out on the peak and the 12 mile reef those anglers jigging have been landing some nice "bandit" kings to 7-8kg and these winter time aggregations of fish can produce some intense sessions. Odd patches of leatherjackets remain to terrorise anglers with a penchant for those expensive japanese jigging braids... The cold water saviour, the luderick, have been continually on the chew in the harbour and pittwater and can be relied on for a humble feed. Interestingly, the odd surgeon fish is nabbing a weed bait here and there and these fish will destroy gentlemanly blackfish tackle within seconds. These are a fun fish to target and it can be hard to believe the power these fish can generate and the gear needed to stop them. I've been told tales of being dusted on a TLD loaded with 50. Having been done over on 20 straight to the hook it is plausible now. The issue lies in the fact that you need tiny hooks and almost all of these will straighten under medium to heavy load. And so it continues.. Good luck and tight lines from the crew at Fish Outta Water.
