Fishing Report 12/8/10

Kingfish fever appears to be taking hold of town with many anglers showing healthy symptoms. Fortunately, this affliction is far less insidious than anything medical! Whether you are a boatie or a land-lubber there are plentiful opportunities for both lure and bait approaches. Around the harbour there have been showings of fish feeding on the surface, seemingly interested in small fingerling baitfish. The various marker beacons and bridges have been strongholds, and a good population of kings have been hanging out on the inshore reefs of the area. Live and fresh dead squid has been the number one bait, and for those keen on casting lures, focus on the structure and try rubber sluggos, 105 and 135 Roosta poppers and the new Shimano Ocea Pencils in the 45gm size.
Several anglers livebaiting inshore for kings have made aquaintence with juvenile mako sharks, with these little chaps chomping up live slimies and pike with gusto and more often than not winning their freedom thanks to their wicked dentures.
Rock anglers have been hooking quite a few kings with a standout by FOW regular Drew Bevins taking a 10kg fish. It does take a lot of dedication to land fish of this calibre and up, and that usually means dealing with your fair share of big bonito and salmon. For the sportfisho among us, these smaller fare are great fun with a 4kg spin outfit and will provide numerous exciting battles.
Big bream are being taken of a night off the beach and are now amassing in numbers around the harbours many moored boat hulls and marinas. Around the sandflats dusky flathead are beginning to awake for the summer, ready to feed on the influx of small baitfish. These same baitfish are attracting big mobs of salmon to town and can be seen around the harbour and pittwater on the surface chasing the fry.
