Fishing Report Thursday 9/9/10

Things are moving slowly but surely in this neck of the woods as we get the first real concentrations of small vital baitfish. Naturally, these begin to trigger the food chain and we as anglers can begin to capitolise on this. As they have been for the last month or more, schools of salmon can be found out the front of the beaches and headlands "slurping" up on tiny bait and this makes an exciting fly and light tackle opportunity. In addition, lately, some rat kingfish and bonito have been getting into the feed on offer. The kings will start moving in around the coastal rock shelves about now and will be looking for bait in the form of whitebait and garfish to hoover up. Poppers that imitate gars like the ever faithful Cotton Cordell Pencil Popper will be hard to beat for the little bandit kingies. On the troll in the washes shallow and deep divers in the 10-15cm range have been nabbing plenty of bonito for the boatie brigade.
Out wider, quite a few mako sharks have been sighted and hooked and reports tell of the average fish around the 100kg mark which should certainly prove a handful of dynamite.
On the beaches some nice sized bream have been taken early in the morning and at night on squid and pilchard baits and plenty of tenacious salmon are available as well. For those casting bigger baits, some thumper bronze whalers sharks are making an early appearance and destroying gear to boot.
Squidding in pittwater has proved difficult and even those local gun cephalopod hunters are drawing blanks. In the harbour however there are at least a few there for the taking but it has been far from a hot season on them. The flathead are now making their way up onto the shallower margins of the various bays and small diving minnows and plastics are bringing quite a few fish undone.
Good luck and tight lines from the crew at Fish Outta Water!
