Fishing Report Thursday 2/9/10

Welcome to spring fishos! Weren't we treated with some lovely warm dry weather for the first of september? The hazy conditions can make for some prime pelagic opportunites as they freely come to the surface chasing bait. It will be interesting to see if those big pods of bonito will return over the next week and many sportfishos will be keeping an eye peeled for the odd pod of striped tuna assaulting bait. Kingfish remain most consistent schooling over the deeper reefs out around the 12 mile mark and out here jigging is an effective way of picking a fight. Some nice deep sea perch have added a tasty dimension to the bag for those sending baits into the abyss. Fillet sized sand flathead are taking drifted paternoster baits over the traditional grounds and even up toward the spit.
Closer in there have been reported rogue packs of kingies in the harbour but while the water is still a little cold tempting these fish will be the challenge. Live arrow squid and slimy mackeral are the choice baits and the odd shoal of slimies are available for lucky anglers who stumble upon them. The john dory season has not really even taken off this year which has been odd. Big flathead are beginning to wake from their winter slumber and seem to have a matching appetite with big 7" plastics and larger live baits the crucial offerings. The odd pup mulloway is turning up around the harbour snaffling smaller lures intended for bream and trevally. Fingers crossed we see some larger jew soon.
Arrow squid abound through the harbour and pittwater as well as some larger calamari.
Good luck and tight lines from the crew at Fish Outta Water!
