Fishing Report Thursday 19/8/10

Unfortunately for those among us who own some big flash game gear it will remain cold and dusty as the tuna are still non-existent. However, as spring gets underway the striped marlin should cruise down our way and liven up the scene. There should still be some blue-eye out in the abyss for those with the means to send a bait deep.
On the inshore side of things there have been schools of rat kings (undersize) up on the surface outside of Broken Bay occasionally and a fly or plastic sluggo cast within on light gear will erupt in some exciting action. The salmon will be cruising most headlands and beaches chasing baitfish and there have been anglers spinning them up on some large 85gm+ lures so they must been chasing pilchards. Not surprisingly then, beach fishos are braining them on whole ganged pillies fished in the gutters day and night. Expect some chunky tailor to snaffle the odd bait too, and these cold water fish will be in good condition.
For those looking for a solid epoxy cracking fix, plenty of solid drummer have been very receptive to a bread burley trail and peeled prawn baits. There have been quite a few reports of fish topping 3.5kg, and when considering the close rugged terrain necessary to hook these pigs, makes for a pretty intense battle.
Squid have been rather thin in numbers in the harbour, and the size has been down considerably on what it should be. In pittwater, thin algae has been covering the weedbeds and this has seemed to put the squid off and as such the more oceanic kelp beds would be the place to look.
Finally, some fat bream and just legal snapper have been receptive to a good burley trail and lightly weighted baits, although just remember that at this time those fat bream will be spawning so please exercise restraint when amassing a feed.
Good luck and tight lines from the crew at Fish Outta Water!
