Fishing Report Friday 26th February 2010

The East Australian Current has been racing downhill off NSW recently and the few beakies that are cruising within it and being whisked briskly past sydney and most ports for that matter. It seems that very recently just to our north the water has concentrated and the big schools of slimies are beginning to stack up and the marlin have become a common propostition. As the water continues to race south anglers chasing mahi mahi have reported huge bow waves coming off the F.A.Ds as well as the odd strong swimming dorado. High water temperatures abound in sydney both in and offshore and with it some tropical oddities. At this time of year we have experienced rainbow runner mixed in with kings, various members of the jack (trevally) family such as black-banded amberjack at the F.A.Ds, juvenile diamond trevally in the shallows, moses perch on plastics in the harbour and a mangrove jack speared off north head... The frigate mackeral are zipping around in the harbour and pittwater chasing micro bait on the (unfortunately) tidal rubbish lines. These bullets are super fun to hook on micro gear like 3kg, or 2kg, or even 1kg if you're game. 3kg is probably the more sensible line class, managing to combine the right mix of stopping power while still losing plenty of line and having a ball. The mulloway have been on the prowl lately with reports coming from both the harbour and the hawkesbury. Long time FOW regular Zaven (pictured above) pulled a metre long fish from the harbour one night on a whole salted pilchard and gave him a memorable tussle from his land-based possie. A few schoolies to 4kg have been succumbing to 3" and 4" plastic minnows flicked around patches of whitebait. Squidgy flickbaits have been the standout lure. Just this morning a tale of woe came in from the river as a big jew was hooked one the early morning tide change on a big squid head and gut bait. Big head shakes and straight determined runs were the order until the heavy line was unfortunately shredded on some unseen rocky structure. Painful!
Good luck and tight lines from the crew at Fish Outta Water! |
